The comparative analysis of L.N.Tolstoy’s religious and philosophical works and I.I.Mechnikov’s papers highlights their opposing views on long and happy life and easy death. Tolstoy’s religious ideas about impersonal immortality are contrasted with Mechnikov’s scientific ideas about orthobiosis (a long 90-150-year life logically ending with the willingness to die). A natural death is easy and similar to falling asleep.
