The article centers on the classification of positive-evaluative speech acts (approval, praise, flattery) in English fiction. It also focuses on functional and semantic description of positive-evaluative speech acts in dialogical discourse. Approval, praise, flattery are treated as similar, but not identical positive-evaluative speech acts. The paper analyzes the combinability of positive-evaluative speech acts with other speech acts. The author maintains that praise has the largest combinability, since it ensures the implementation of various intentions. Flattery has the smallest combinability, since the speaker who uses this strategy concentrates mainly on his/her mercenary aims.

compliment, flattery, approval, evaluation, praise, speech act.
