The 18th century witnessed a dramatic change in the Swedish system of government. If in the early 18th century the kingdom of Sweden was absolute monarchy, by the 1720s it had become parliamentary monarchy. In the late 18th century the country was ruled by the King and the Riksdag. However this form of government was not very viable and by the late 1780s the King had again become an absolute ruler. There is no profound historiographic analysis of the issue, for both Russian and foreign scholars have traditionally concentrated on the history of the kingdom, its economy, and its prominent political figures such as Charles XII, Bernadotte, and Horn. The first research devoted to the history of Sweden, and its political regime, in particular, is a monograph by a French educator Mabli “Learning History. The Swedish Government”. The author analyses the Swedish political system and highlights its advantages. Another work dealing with the political system of Sweden is Ingvar Anderson’s ‘History of Sweden’. The research analyzes important documents and provides an interpretation of the activity of various kings. Another researcher worth mentioning is a Swedish scholar Weibull, the author of “The Short History of Sweden”, which was published in 1997. The research is based on recent historic discoveries but some facts are subjectively interpreted. Among Russian scholars one can mention A.S.Kan, the author of “The Scandinavian Countries”. The scholar analyzes the interconnection of various historic episodes and explains the most important acts of the Swedish Constitution.
