The Overgrowing by Woodland and Other Vegetation on Abandoned Land as a Factor of Geochemical Resistance of Lands to Anthropogenic Mercury Emissions. P. 97-124.

The critical loads method is used to investigate geographical peculiarities of abandoned land resistance to anthropogenic mercury emissions to the atmosphere. The article presents a map of abandoned lands in the center of the Ryazan region in 2015 (the data are kindly supplied by A.V. Prishchepov). The article manifests the regularities of regional scale atmospheric mercury transport. It ranges industrial mercury emitters according to the degree of their impact. The article maintains that contrast impact is mostly associated with cement production (a combination of extensive Hg emissions (semi-volatile) and comparatively low chimneys (120 m)). The article highlights that overgrowing by woodland and other vegetation is characteristic of windless regions, hence lower resistance to mercury emissions. The article maintains that abandoned lands offer more favorable conditions to technological pollutants transported in the atmosphere. The article shows local but contrastive Hg anomalies in post-agrogenic woodland, with mercury levels 20–200 times elevated above background.
