The article analyzes the concepts of knowledge and inference in academic critical texts and focuses on the linguistic peculiarities of their representation in the text. The author of the article differentiates between the concepts of knowledge and inference for the sake of interpre-tation and systematization of linguistic means. The author focuses on modal means of the text, such as mood, modal verbs, infinitival structures, modal words. These linguistic means enable the realization of knowledge and inference by taking into account the communicative purpose of academic writing.
