Abstract. The Sino-Japanese War of 1894–1895 was an important event for the Asian region. The confrontation between the two empires attracted the attention of European powers, which had their own interests in this matter. Countries that closely followed the development of the conflict expressed their attitude to the war through the press, an analysis of which can show how Japan and China were perceived by the West during that period.

The article attempts to analyze the images of the Qing Empire and the Land of the Rising Sun, shown on the pages of the British press during the first Sino-Japanese War. The representation of Japan and China in such authoritative publications of the second half of the 19th century as The Daily News, The Evening Mail, The Morning Post, The Illustrated London News, shaped the attitude of the British towards Asian countries, their foreign and domestic policies, culture and art, and their place in international relations. The perception of “alien” culture, and through it “one’s own” culture, makes it possible to look at the events of the military conflict of 1894–1895 through the eyes of contemporaries.
