Abstract. Based on legislative materials and office work of administrative organs, Soviet bodies and public organizations, and on materials of regional media, this article examines the preparation, implementation and results of the work of the Smolensk Regional Extraordinary Commission to investigate the atrocities of the Nazi invaders. It describes the members of the commission, the circumstances and results of their activities to establish the range of human losses and damage to the economy of the region done by the Nazi occupants.
