Abstract. The relevance of the research is accounted for by the fact that the issue of Russia-Caucasus cultural dialogue in M. Lermontov’s poem “Ismail-Bey” is underinvestigated. The aim of the research is to identify the peculiarities of aesthetic, poetic and conceptual components of the image of the Caucasus in Lermontov’s poem. The object of the research is the image of the Caucasus as viewed by Lermontov and the poet’s emotional and philosophical perception of Caucasian history. The research employs structural, semantic and hermeneutic methods, it analyzes poetic elements and interprets them, eliciting hidden implications. The authors maintain that the image of the Caucasus depicted in the poem is a dynamic model intrinsically connected with Lermontov’s worldview. The image of the Caucasus is created by means of personification, epithets and similes. The poem focuses on personal development, on temporal and spatial interconnections between a person and the world. The Caucasus is both the setting of historical and political events and the background against which people’s spirituality develops. The practical significance of the research is accounted for by the fact that the results can be used to train university students.
