Abstract. The article examines the genre specificity of A. I. Solzhenitsyn’s two-part story Apricot Jam. The peculiarity of this genre formation is that, despite the relative completeness and independence of the two parts, the problems of the complete work are revealed only by comparing them and identifying the interrelated details, symbols, and motifs. It is stated that the story shows two different poles of Soviet reality: the hungry, cold life, exhausting forced labor of a simple Russian man Fyodor Ivanovich and the comfort and intellectual entertainment for the inventors of lies (the Writer, Vasily Kiprianovich, and the Critic). Both of these poles are united by the symbolic image of “apricot jam.”
Keywords: a two-part story, genre, detail, symbol, Apricot Jam, A. I. Solzhenitsyn.
