Abstract. The paper compares the Russian and Japanese copies of the text of the Treaty of Commerce and Borders between Russia and Japan, also known as the Shimoda Treaty, highlighting the core and peripheral features of the prototypical concept of the “contract” genre. We analyze the two texts of the articles of the treaty, its headings and supplementary information from various official sources. The main sources of the article are publicly available official copies of the treatise in the Russian and Japanese languages. The article provides scanned copies of the original Treaty signed in 1855 in the two languages. The Russian copy is kept in the Archive of the Foreign Policy of the Russian Empire, and the Japanese copy is in the National Parliamentary Library of Japan.
Keywords: bilingual treaty, concept, Shimoda Treaty, Japanese language, completion of Japan’s isolation, competition for colonies.
