The article is devoted to critical analysis of the notions of «speech skills» and «types of speech skills». The author proves the academic groundlessness of the idea of inclusion into them receptive speech skills of listening and reading. As a result, within the suggested paradigm they can’t be considered linked to practical aims of foreign language didactics. Learning a foreign language is an active process of self-development that is connected with creative activity of the students through formation and development of ideas in a foreign language.
