The motif of intoxication in Oscar Wilde’s works. P.86-96.

The paper treats the motif of intoxication through the prism of O. Wilde’s philosophy of unreality. O. Wilde’s dandy-characters who express the author’s point of view are subject to opium intoxication. They are observers, whose ideas are based on the philosophy of fatalism, individualism, art-for-art’s-sake theory. They seek oblivion of routine in intoxication. In O. Wilde’s tragedies wine symbolizes blood as the Atonement. Wine spilled on the floor or on earth is a pagan token. Intoxicated (enamored) adulterers and murderers communicate to God through repentance and self-improvement. O. Wilde was not the first to exploit the motif of intoxication, but he was the first to weave it into a philosophy.
