The article dwells upon the mental modus as an interpretational component of the text in the sphere of scientific communication. It systematises the theoretical aspects of modus research in linguistics. Its main objective is to define the mental modus essence and to see its relationship to the notion “modality”. In the course of the text analysis the author points out the main types of the mental modus: modus of real, probable and emotional assessments. The use of the cognitive and linguopragmatic approaches to the interpretation of the text made it possible to define mental modus as an interpretational component. The main attention is given to the means of expression of mental modus in accordance with its types and the sphere of its usage.
