The paper dedicated to the centenary anniversary of Ryazan State University named for S.A. Yessenin sketches a portrait of a scholar, teacher and translator J.M. Kolker, who has been working at the university for half a century. The paper lists the major milestones of the scholar’s work, sums up some of his academic achievements, characterizes his views on communicative foreign language teaching approach, dwells on his theory and practice of poetic translation.
