Lewis Carroll about his travelling to Russia (based on the writer`s diary of 1867). P. 82- 89.

The article examines the diary kept by Lewis Carroll during his trip to Russia in 1867. Lewis Car-roll travelled together with his friend and colleague Henry Lindon. They shared a common interest in nature, art and travelling. The diary entries enable us to trace their journey. They visited St. Petersburg, Moscow, Nizhniy Novgorod. Visits to cathedrals, convents and monasteries, meeting hierarchs of Russian Orthodox Church were special points of interest for Carroll and his companion. Being both in the holy orders they tried to facilitate the communication between Anglican and Russian Churches.

Сarroll is interested in different aspects of life in Russia. He visits museums and theatres in Mos-cow, St. Petersburg and Nizhniy Novgorod, goes to Peterhof, Kronstadt, New Jerusalem, admires Russian countryside.In his diary Carroll gives a very high assessment of the Russian art collections and architecture, the performance of Russian actors. He describes his impressions of Russian people, their customs and habits.Carroll pays special attention to the life of Russian children. He visits an orphanage in Moscow and shares compassion on those children, who suffer from poverty and disease.

Carroll’s observations, thoughts and ideas enable us to understand his personality more deeply. His diary once again shows Carroll’s humanistic and benevolent nature, his genuine interest in other cultures which finds its expression in his writings.
