The article analyzes a recently published work by A.A. Zimin, namely the book titled “The Shrine of Science”. The author of the article treats the book as a unique historiographic source about historical science in the Soviet Union on the example of the Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The article analyzes professional principles and requirements applicable to a historian. The article uses the book to analyze the life and work of some Soviet historians against the background of political and ideological campaigns of the 1930s, the 1940s and the post-war years.
