“The Extraordinary Adventures of a Russian Peasant Dementy Ivanov Tsikulin in Asia, Egypt, and Eastern India in 1808–1821, Described by Himself” is a travelogue, a popular genre of the Russian literature of the late 18th – early 19th centuries. The storyteller of this travelogue is neither a noble man nor a commoner, but a peasant born in the village of Lovtsy (Ryazan Province). The manuscript of the “Adventures…”, which was given to the Northern Archives journal (St.Petersburg) by a future Decembrist P.A. Mukhanov, was published in 1825. “The Adventure…” was noticed by A.S. Griboedov, who commented upon the travelogue, saying that the text contains a number of inaccuracies. “The Adventure…”, which is an asset to Ryazan local studies, has never been thoroughly analyzed. The goal of our research is to analyze the travelogue against the background of the local culture.
