The paper focuses on the major factors that hinder Switzerland’s accession to the European Union. The Swiss support the policy of neutrality and do not approve of regional and international integration. The policy of neutrality, which binds the multi-ethnic and multi-religious Swiss community and provides Swiss citizens with a common ideology and identity, accounts for the country’s nonalignment with the European Union. If Switzerland accessed to the European Union, it would have to alter or abolish some principles of the policy of neutrality. The paper also treats the genesis and development of bilateral relations between Switzerland and the European Union. The author weighs the potential mutual economic benefits and

political advantages of Switzerland and the European Union against some factors (the potential financial challenges, for example) that hinder the alignment of the country with the European Union.

bilateral relations, European Union, integration, neutrality, nonalignment, policy of neutrality, cooperation, sovereignty.
