MULTICULTURAL LITERATURE: RESPONDING TO NEW CHALLENGES OF THE 21ST CENTURY

The article treats some issues of modern English postcolonial literature, focusing on such characteristics as hybridity, interdimensionality, threshold concepts. The article also centers on the new generation of British, American and Canadian writers, whose works are believed to belong to multicultural literature, for their cultural identity (as well as the identity of their characters) is a mixture of ethnicities. Speaking about the essence of postcolonial literature, the author underlines its philosophical context and genre characteristics, for works written by multicultural writers are multilingual and polyphonic. In postcolonial literature, the connection between dominant and subordinate entities, which is symmetrical and based on violence, is partially destroyed. Postcolonial literature is constantly developing and open to introspection; it incorporates contradictory beliefs and opposing views, enables cultural exchange and enrichment.
