EMPEROR CYRIL I AND THE ULTRA-ROYALIST FUTURE OF RUSSIA: HOPES, FRUSTRATION, FALSE PRETENCES

UDC 947.084.223

The article analyzes the formation and evolution of the legitimist political movement among Russian emigrants in the 1920s–1930s. The research treats the personality of the self-proclaimed Russian Emperor in exile, Grand Duke Cyril Vladimirovich of Russia. The article centers on the social aspects of the political movement, on the values it adheres to, on development trends it is willing to pursue, on the forms of political struggle it has chosen. The article also focuses on officers of the Russian Imperial Guard and on their involvement in the ultra-royalist movement. The research analyzes the peculiarities of political emigration form Russia during the aforementioned time period.

The article underlines that the legitimist movement was characterized by inconsistent guidelines, promiscuous collaboration with various political forces (including national socialists), ambiguous mechanisms of political struggle, and populist nature of political slogans. The severe crisis of the movement and its political fiasco are associated with the death of Grand Duke Cyril Vladimirovich, who was, probably, the only one to integrate these otherwise uncoordinated elements.
