State Anticlerical Policies in the Ryazan Province. P. 35-40.

The paper analyzes the relations between the state and the church in the Ryazan province in 1929, the year when the law on separation of church and state was issued. The paper traces the changes introduced into the Soviet legislative system which maintained that antireligious struggle equated to class struggle with “counter-revolutionary forces”. The paper analyzes anticlerical policies of the Soviet government, such as compulsory anti-religious education in schools, training antireligious specialists and propagandists, creating bureaus of antireligious activities. The paper also treats the anti-Easter campaign of 1929 at schools which involved the Komsomol and Pioneer organizations. The paper uses archive materials to investigate the work of the church committee which was designed by the decision of the presidium of the Ryazan municipal council. The paper treats the decisions to close churches taken by district and municipal execution committees. The paper draws conclusions about the relationships between local authorities and faith groups.
