Genre characteristics of plays by A. Vampilov. P.51-63.

The paper treats plays written by Alexander Vampilov, an outstanding Russian playwright of the thaw epoch. A. Vampilov is one of the first Russian playwrights of the late 20th century who analyze social life through the prism of an ordinary person’s life. The main issues discussed by A. Vampilov in his plays are rural life, daily routine, home and family, choices and insights. In his plays, A. Vampilov discusses urgent, yet eternal issues; he intricately combines dramatic, prosaic and poetic devices, theatrical conventions and authentic tokens of the epoch.

The paper focuses on genre peculiarities of A. Vampilov’s plays, which are characterized by the fusion of artistic devices of joke, vaudeville, situation comedy, farce, and melodrama, social and social psychological drama. The author employs a comparative-typological method and an empirical method to analyze Alexander Vampilov’s plays “Farewell in June”, “The Elder Son”, “Provincial Anecdotes”, “Duck Hunting”, “Last Summer in Chulimsk”.
