The article deals with the 1977 military coup in Pakistan, a coup d’état conducted by Chief of Army Staff General Zia-ul-Haq. The author treats the policies of the military regime, Zia-ul-Haq’s attempt to Islamize the country, and the introduction of punishments stipulated in the Shariah law. The author treats the attitude of western powers to the policies of the military regime and accounts for the change in their attitude.
