THE GEOMORPHOLOGIC STRUCTURE OF THE VOLGA VALLEY AND THE ADJOINING INTERFLUVIAL PLAINS IN THE VICINITY OF THE VILLAGE OF SESLAVYE (THE TVER REGION)

20th-Century researchers have collected substantial data on the geomorphologic structure of the Upper Volga. Nowadays, it is essential that scientists should perform more advanced exploration work to collect new data about already explored geographic objects.
Within the framework of the present research, some geologic and geomorphologic works have been performed in the vicinity of the village of Seslavye (the Tver region). The explored portion of the Volga valley has a floodplain and three terraces above the floodplain. Interfluvial plains include glacial and fluvial-glacial landforms.
The article shows morphological differences of terraces of different levels, which can provide information about their age. The first terrace has a well-preserved inundated ridge-and-runnel landform; the rear part of the terrace is waterlogged, which may indicate that the terrace is comparatively young. The second terrace has some ridge-and-runnel characteristics, though they are less pronounced. The third terrace is excessively transformed under the influence of eolian processes, which is not typical of low terraces. Eolian processes are not registered in interfluvial plains either. Interfluvial plains are mostly sandy.
The age of the upper terraces of the Volga River has not been determined yet. The comparison of the morphology of the terraces and the information on absolute dating of alluvial deposits (higher up the river) shows that the Volga River has been shaping its modern look since the Late Valdai glacial epoch.
