 article investigates Moscow economic development and site improvement during the rule of Grand Duke Sergey Alexandrovich of Russia, Governor-General of Moscow, through the prism of Russian historiography. The significance of the late 19th — early 20th centuries and the role the Governor-General played in the economic development and site improvement of Moscow has not yet been thoroughly investigated. Only a few aspects of the issues have been researched. The article analyzes the way Russian historians assess and investigate Moscow economic development and site improvement in general and some aspects of the issue in particular. The name of Grand Duke Sergey Alexandrovich of Russia is associated with such well-investigated phenomena as the reconstruction of Moscow Governor-General’s official residence in Tverskaya Street, the construction of a new building of the State Duma, the construction of monuments commemorating Alexander II and Alexander III. The article also analyzes the way Russian historians assess and research the issue of Moscow museums, the issue of environmental protection and the issue of cultural heritage preservation. The article also analyzes historiographical sources on Grand Duke Sergey Alexandrovich’s contribution to the development of Moscow and the degree of his personal involvement.
