Abstract. The investigation of the spiritual foundation of Russian poetry of the 19th century is
a relevant issue of modern literary studies. The article investigates the motif of prayer in F. I. Tyutchev’s poetry. The poet’s attitude to the sacred word is never unanimous, but the motif of prayer is often present
in his philosophical, romantic, historical, and parody poems. In his early poems, F. I. Tyutchev referring to the prayer of Saint Ephrem, verbalizes his unwillingness to say sacred words “in vain”. The leitmotiv of holy prayer runs throughout Tyutchev’s early and late poetry and is represented in motif of silent prayer. Tyutchev’s philosophical poems highlight the issue of the crisis of belief, whose absence makes one’s appeal to God meaningless. His romantic poems focus on the lyrical speaker’s inability to suffer, pray, trust and love and the loss of a loved one serves as an incentive to pray. In his historiosophical poems, prayer serves as
a marker of human righteousness or sinfulness and as a means to unite Russian people in common prayer. The results of the investigation can be used by literature teachers discussing Tyutchev’s poems. It can also be used to discuss Russian poetry in philological universities.
