The article deals with the mechanism of imprisoning as a way of meting out punishments. The main peculiarity of imprisoning is isolation from other human beings, which presuposes a convict’s confinement in a penitentiary institution. The conditions of keeping convicts in custody are analyzed through the prism of the Concept of Long-Term Development of the criminal executive system of the Russian Federation till 2020.
