Abstract. The relevance of the study lies in the fact that the Chinese language is increasingly growing in demand nowadays, and the history of the development of Chinese studies in Russia has not received sufficient attention. Preferences are given to practical use of the Chinese language rather than the history of its penetration into Russia. The subject of the research is the formation of domestic Chinese studies in the 18th–20th centuries. The purpose of the research is to analyze the evolution of Russian Chinese studies from the 18th to the 20th centuries. The article describes the trends in the study of China, Chinese language and culture that have prevailed at different historical stages. It discusses the major personalities who contributed to the founding and development of Russian sinology. The article lists the main difficulties arising in the process of formation of domestic Chinese studies. The authors make the assumption that historically this is due to the mentality of the Chinese people, who share their cultural characteristics with foreigners rather scarcely, but actively study opposing nations, as well as inner contradictions in the work of Russian activists in the process of forming Chinese-Russian relations. The research is based on the methods of historiographic and theoretical analysis, as well as content analysis of scholarly and educational sources. The results of the study can be applied in the field of linguoculturology and sociology, as well as in further study and analysis of the characteristics of the historical stages of the formation of sinology in Russia.
