The Image of Steppe in the Prose of N. V. Gogol and A. P. Chekhov: a Comparative Analysis     Р. 145-156.

The article analyzes the image of steppe in the Russian literature of the 19th century. Geographical location is known to be one of the factors that shape national mentality. Russia has always been closely associated with steppe and Russian writers have often used the image of steppe in their works. We can find the concept of steppe in the works of such writers and poets as A. S. Pushkin, M. Yu. Lermontov, N. V. Gogol, I. S. Turgenev, A. P. Chekhov, M. Gorky. The article intends to investigate the peculiarities of fictional depiction of steppe in N. V. Gogol’s and A. P. Chekhov’s works. The article analyzes various literary interpretations of the image in an attempt to investigate the image of steppe through the prism of Russian prose.
