The paper throws light on the life and work of M.M. Verkhovskaya, a philologist and a teacher. The paper highlights the connections between the outstanding scholar’s fate and the complex fate of Russia in the 20th century. The paper underlines the human values (such as self-denying devotedness to work, honesty, empathy, etc) that define Professor Verkhovskaya’s personality. The author of the paper maintains that M.M. Verkhovskaya’spersonal qualities enabled her to leave such a significant trail in the hearts and minds of her colleagues and students.
