The paper describes the results of a series of laboratory experiments aimed at assessing the potential of various lawn grasses to accumulate lead, an extremely toxic heavy metal which contaminates urban soils. The experimental study focused on the following lawn grass species: perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), red fescue grass (Festuca rubra L.), smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss.), and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.).

The above-mentioned grass species were grown in vegetative pots with various types of soil mixtures artificially contaminated with lead (350mg/kg).

Vegetation and soil samples were processed in an accredited laboratory by means of atomic absorption spectrometry to evaluate the lead level.

The study shows that perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), red fescue grass (Festuca rubra L.), and smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss.) demonstrate a higher lead accumulation potential, while Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) demonstrates a lower lead accumulation potential.

The research was supported by an RFBR grant No 15-05-04554 ‘Phytoremediation of Urban Soils Contaminated with Heavy Metals by Means of Flowers and Lawn Grasses’.
