The paper analyzes the contradictory views of Russian public opinion on life and work of Lord Palmerston, a British statesman of the mid-19th century. The complex and contradictory figure of Lord Palmerston is analyzed through the poetic images created by a Russian poet, literary critic, and historian P.A. Vyazemsky, whose poems were devoted to the Crimean war and depicted military operations of the Russian and English forces. P.A. Vyazemsky’s poems shaped the views of his contemporaries on the actions of the British politician, and promoted the development of stereotypes about English foreign policy and English-Russian relations in the middle of the 19th century. The authors of the paper maintain that P.A. Vyazemsky’s assessments of Lord Palmerston and his work were never one-sided. This may be explained by the fact that both Lord Palmerston (as a person and as a politician) and the English-Russian relations of the period were very complex.
