The paper focuses on the Russian version of the Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary (1890–1907), the first fundamental thesaurus published in Russia. The Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary covers a great number of political, economic, natural-scientific, industrial, financial, cultural, historical, philological issues. The dictionary covers the achievements of Russian and foreign scientists and scholars and describes topical processes and phenomena of social, academic, scientific and technical spheres. The article treats the scholarsʼ contribution to the thesaurus compilation, analyzes its conceptual structure, the issues discussed in dictionary entries. Some entries treat the work of editors and compilers of the encyclopedic dictionary. The author highlights the originality and novelty of the unique thesaurus prepared by prominent scientists and scholars of the late 19th – early 20th centuries. The article focuses on linguistic issues presented in the Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary, treated comparative linguistics of the late 19th – early 20th centuries and centered on Russian philologists of the 20th century. The article maintains that compared to the German version of the dictionary, the Russian one is a separate edition. The author maintains that the results of the research can be used in higher education.
