The Geodesic Support of Land Registration   at the Territory of the USA during the Colonial Period. P.194- 201.

UDC 528(73)«1607-1775»

The paper deals with means, methods and accuracy of geodesic activities meant to support land registration and surveying in the USA during the colonial period. The paper singles out the major trend of land surveying: new land border demarcation. The paper describes measuring instruments used to determine the direction and length of land borders and their area: chain measures, dividers, cross staffs, measuring rods, and compasses. The paper describes chain measures and their use. The paper provides technical descriptions of measuring tools prepared by land surveyors ( dividers, cross staffs, and measuring rods). The paper describes the methodology of determining land points without a compass. It shows how to measure the area of irregular lands with the help of a measuring rod and a tool for linear measuring.  The paper describes peculiarities of land surveying activities performed with the help of a divider and a compass, major errors and their causes. The paper provides an example of introducing adjustments to demarcated land borders. The paper describes the measures-and-borders system, which was used for land registration purposes during the colonial period. The accuracy of geodesic activities during the period was 1:100.
