MORPHOLOGICAL PECULIARITIES OF THE OKA FLOODPLAIN IN ITS NARROW PART NEAR THE VILLAGE OF KONSTANTINOVO

UDC 551.4(282.247.412)(471.313)

The article defines major morphological characteristics of the Oka floodplain in its narrow part near the village of Konstantinovo. The article treats some geological peculiarities of the Oka valley, focusing on the age of strata underlying quaternary friable deposits. The article determines the width of alluvium bottom phase and focuses on spatial transformations typical of different morphological types of floodplains. The article relies on the already existing classification of morphological types of floodplains to single out the dependence of its forms on their vicinity to the modern riverbed of the Oka. The article treats some peculiarities of the Oka riverbed in the area. It focuses on its rectilinear and meandering profiles, stream-bank erosion, and meander bars. The article analyzes the position of three bends of the Oka River in its narrow part near the village of Konstantinovo and determines their major parameters and lithological characteristics of floodplain friable deposits. The article determines the number, the width, and the depth of buried soil horizons in floodplain friable deposits and their distribution in morphologically different parts of the floodplain. The research performed in the narrow part of the Oka floodplain near the village of Konstantinovo has detected some land forming processes responsible for the appearance of the geographic complexes.
