THE HISTORY OF BUSINESS CULTURE FORMATION IN RUSSIAN PROVINCES (the late 19th — early 20th centuries)

UDC 947.081/.083

The article treats some historical aspects of business culture development at the example of merchants of Vyatka Province. Special emphasis is laid on changes in merchantsʼ professional habits after Alexander IIʼs reforms, in particular after the Notary Law issued in 1866. The article maintains that merchants promoted the establishment of notary offices in active markets and at industrial sites. The evolution of business culture in the late 19th — early 20th centuries was largely stimulated by fact that merchants understood the necessity to safeguard their business reputation and to foster the development of general and professional education in the province. An important contribution to the development of business culture in the Province of Vyatka was the economic environment where a representative of any ethnic groups could prosper in wholesale marketing, retailing, or manufacturing. The author maintains that Russian history provides a whole number of examples of civilized and rational business culture formation, which is a welcome experience in the modern world.
